Dr. Karen Brasel stepping down as assistant dean for graduate medical education

Selected vice president of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Brasel will step down from her GME position and as director of OHSU’s general surgery residency program on May 1, but will remain on faculty. “Dr. Brasel has been an incredible source of wisdom and experience in the expansion, accreditation, oversight, and improvement of our residency and fellowship programs,” said Joyce Hollander-Rodriguez, M.D., associate dean for GME. An interim will not be named, but the position will be posted in the future.

Organ transplant programs help a record number of patients in 2023

In 2023, the transplant team performed more solid organ transplants than ever before with 178 kidney transplants and 90 liver transplants. This work is reflective of the entire OHSU health care system that is involved in the care of these patients. Most importantly, none of this could happen without the generosity of organ donors and their families.

"We are now looking at ADHD as a whole-brain issue"

A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience used neuroimaging to confirm ADHD’s widespread effects on the brain. “This is exciting, because much of the prior research has focused on individual regions of the brain, but our study was seeing that this isn’t the case across the board,” said corresponding author Michael Mooney, Ph.D., assistant professor of medical informatics and clinical epidemiology, OHSU School of Medicine. “In fact, there is signal from all areas of the brain that are contributing to the risk of ADHD.”
